Objective: The type of coping strategies has an important influence on how to cope with stress. Various factors contributes to the choice of coping strategies, such as personality traits. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of personality traits in coping strategies used by mothers of children with autism. Method: For this purpose, a correlation design was used, in which 56 mothers of children with autism were recruited based on a convenience sampling approach from teaching- supporting institutions in Isfahan. The sample members completed NEO personality traits and coping strategies questionnaires. Data analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient test, and also step by step regression analysis was used. Results: The personality traits of neuroticism had a statistically significant positive correlation with escape-avoidance, distancing coping strategies and on the other hand, it had negative significant correlation with positive reappraisal. Extraversion and conscientiousness had significant negative relationship with escape-avoidance coping style. The relationship of extraversion and agreeableness with seeking social support and positive reappraisal was positive and significant. Relationship of conscientiousness with planned problem solving and positive reappraisal were significant too. Regression analysis indicated that neuroticism was a significant predictor of coping strategies of distancing and escape-avoidance. Coping strategy of seeking social support was predicted by agreeableness and positive reappraisal was predicted by conscientiousness and neuroticism. Conclusion: Adoption of coping strategies and personality traits are correlated and individuals at risk of high sources of stress such as mothers of children with autism should be trained to adopt efficacious coping strategies in accordance with their personality traits.
