Background and Objective: The aim of the present study was to adapt play and activities based on the total physical response method and evaluate its effectiveness on the expressive and receptive language of children with autism. Method: In this study, a mixed research method and a sequential exploratory design with an instrument development model were used. The sampling method was carried out sequentially and in two qualitative and quantitative stages. In the qualitative stage, a series of play and activities were adapted and validated based on the total physical response method. And in the quantitative stage, the semi-experimental research was of the pre-test, post-test type with a control group. And the statistical population included all autistic children aged 7 to 12 years in the city of Qom (62 children), from whom 22 children were selected by purposive sampling and randomly divided into two experimental groups (11 children) and control (11 children). The experimental group received play and activities adapted based on the total physical response method during 22 sessions (each session was one hour) and the control group did not receive training. The research tool was the Test of Language Development (TOLD-P:3) by Newcomer (1997). The data were analyzed by analysis of covariance using SPSS-27 software. Findings: The findings obtained by using analysis of covariance after the intervention showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control group subjects in terms of expressive and receptive language at the post-test stage (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that play and activities tailored based on the total physical response method improve the expressive and receptive language of children with autism.
