The Relationship between Academic Achievement and Nutritional Status in Mentally Retarded Students of Tehran

The aim of this study is to determine the existence of malnutrition and its relationship with academic achievement in the mentally retarded students of Tehran. The sample consisted of %10 of the students from the special schools for mentally retarded children from different districts of Tehran. In order to identify the nutritional status and the existence of malnutrition, the anthropometric findings of the subjects based on standard methods, were processed using EPI software. In this research, the mean scores of the school subjects in the first term were used as an index for identifying the academic achievement of the subjects. The results show that %43.3 of the subjects had suffered from malnutrition in the past, %30.3 are still suffering from it and %18.8 of subjects have some kind of obesity or are over- weight. There is a significant difference between the means of academic achievement in two groups of subjects, one with malnutrition in the past and the other with good nutrition (P<0.01). So, according to the WHO universal norm, we can conclude that malnutrition is one of the important health problems in the mentally retarded students of Teh
