Objectives: The present research was conducted to study the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation of verbal working memory and visuo-spatial working memory on improvement of mathematical performance of students with mathematics learning disorder.
Methods: This was a semi-experimental study with mixed design ANOVA and experimental and control groups. The sample included 30, 3rd-grade female students, according to DSM-5 criteria, suffering from Mathematics Learning Disorder who were selected using purposive sampling and classified into three groups trough random assignment; verbal working memory rehabilitation (n=10), visuo-spatial working memory rehabilitation (n=10), and control (n=10). Samples were selected on the basis of DSM-5 criteria, Wechsler Intelligence Test, Assessment of Persian Reading Ability (APRA) Test, and Child Symptom Inventory-4 (CSI-4). After conducting Kay Math Mathematic Test, n-back Verbal and Visuo-spatial Working Memory Tests in all groups, one of the groups received verbal working memory intervention and the other one received visuo-spatial working memory intervention for 20 sessions (each session, 45 min). At the end of the interventions, and one month later (follow up) mathematical performance and verbal and Visuo-spatial working memory were assessed again in all groups.
Results: The results indicated that both verbal working memory and Visuo-spatial working memory interventions significantly increased the scores of students in mathematical performance. So, these interventions were effective in improvement of mathematical performance.
Conclusion: According to the research findings, interventions conducted for working memory rehabilitation can be used as complementary interventions to improve the problems of students with mathematics learning disabilities.
