Designing a Cognitive Flexibility Training Program and Its Impact on Reducing Behavioral Problems in Intellectual Disability

Objective: The purpose of this study was to design a cognitive flexibility training program and its effect on reducing the behavioral problems of intellectual disability. Method: This was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test, post-test and control group design. 24 students were selected from among 60 intellectual disability students aged 14-18 years through available sampling method in Sarpolzahab City. Subjects were randomly divided in to two groups each including 12 members (one test group and one control group). The experimental group received cognitive flexibility training in 15 sessions (each session was 45 minutes) while the control group did not receive this training. For data collection, the Wisconsin test software and the CBCL questionnaire (parents and teachers forms) were used. Data were analyzed by SPSS21 Results: The results of multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed a significant effect of cognitive flexibility training program on reducing behavioral problems in intellectual disability adolescents. This result showsthat there is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in at least one of the dependent variables in (P=0/001). Conclusion: Behavioral problems can be reduced by using cognitive flexibility training. Therefore, therapists can find new ways to solve behavioral problems by employing appropriate techniques to increase cognitive flexibility and educating the with. adolescences intellectual disability.
