Investigating the Mediating Role of Emotional Regulation In Relation To Family Relations and Temperament with Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of emotional regulation in relation to temperament and family emotional atmosphere with symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder. Methods: 384 male students between the age of 13-16 were selected through accidental cluster sampling in the year of 2021-2022. The research method was correlational structural equations modeling. Hill burns (1964) family emotional atmosphere, Garnefski's  emotional self-regulation (2006), Cloninger (1994) temperament and Achenbach (1991)Youth self-report were used, all of which had good validity and reliability. Results: The results showed that there is a direct and significant correlation between emotional regulation and symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (0.19, P<0.01). Also there is a direct and significant relation between temperament and symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (-0.33, P<0.01). Pearson's correlation analyses showed that there is a meaningful relation between family emotional atmosphere and symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (-0.40, P<0.01). The structural model analysis showed that the path between family emotional atmosphere and temperament, oppositional defiant disorder, and emotional self-regulation is significant. Also the path between temperament and emotional regulation, and oppositional defiant disorder was significant and meaningful. And lastly the path between emotional regulation and oppositional defiant disorder was significantly meaningful and the model fit after adjustment was adequate (NFI=0.91, CFI=0.93). Conclusion: Symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder are influenced by various factors, including emotional regulation, temperament and family emotional atmosphere.
