Determining the effectiveness of Fernald's multisensory method (VAKT) in increasing verbal comprehension, verbal reasoning, and working memory in slow-learning students in the first grade of elementary school

Abstract:
Objectives:
The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of Fernald's multisensory method (VAKT) in increasing verbal comprehension, verbal reasoning, and working memory in slow-learning students in the first grade of elementary school in Shiraz.
Materials and Methods:
The present study was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group and a one-month follow-up period. The statistical population of this study was all slow-learning students in Shiraz in the academic year 1403-1404, and the experimental sample size was 24 students who were selected based on voluntary sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (two groups of 15 people). The measurement tool of this study was the Wechsler Intelligence Test (2003), and the experimental group received 20 sessions of training.
Findings:
The findings showed that the interaction effect of stages and group on the variables of verbal reading comprehension IQ, perceptual reasoning IQ, and working memory IQ was significant at the 0.05 level. The training and control groups had significant differences in terms of verbal reading comprehension IQ, perceptual reasoning IQ, and working memory IQ in the three stages of pre-test, post-test, and follow-up.
Conclusion:
Fernald's multisensory method training was effective on verbal comprehension IQ, perceptual reasoning IQ, and working memory IQ in slow-learning students in the first grade of elementary school.
