Mahdie Salehi Komroodi *1
Abstract:   (11 Views)
Purpose: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy on the joint attention of children with autism. For this purpose, the experimental method with pre-test and post-test of one group was used.
Materials and methods: The statistical population included a number of 7-9 year old children with autism spectrum disorder in Semnan city in the academic year of 2021-2022. After choosing the desired school, 13 students who met the research criteria were selected as a sample. Before and after the intervention, the students were tested to evaluate the effectiveness of play therapy. To measure shared attention, the work of recording the categories of shared attention between the examiner and the child was used. Also, in this research, the intelligence score of these children was investigated. The range of the general intelligence score in the four revised Wechsler intelligence test was from 89 to 101, and the mean and standard deviation of their general intelligence was 95.54 ± 3.77.
Results: The findings of this research, using the paired t statistical method, show that by implementing child-centered play therapy for autistic children in the final sessions of play therapy, the ratio of initiation of joint attention of the examiner (performer of child-centered play therapy) has decreased and the initiation of joint attention of autistic children has increased. So that in the last session of child-centered play therapy, joint attention has approached the average states of 50% for the examiner and 50% for the autistic child.
Conclusion: Based on this, it can be concluded that child-centered play therapy increases joint attention in children with autism and improves the continuation of joint attention.
