Objective: The aim of this study was to compare metacognitive beliefs, thought control strategies and attributional styles of outstanding and normal students. Method: The research method was descriptive and causal-comparative. The statistical population included outstanding and ordinary high school students in Damghan (3000 people). All students were selected as the sample size based on Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table by cluster random sampling method. The research instruments were attribution style (Seligman et al., 1979), thought control (Wells and Davis, 1994) and metacognitive beliefs (Carnes & Huttonows, 1997). Questionnaires data analysis was performed by SPSS-20using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference between the outstanding and normal students in metacognitive beliefs, thought control strategies and attributional styles. The average beliefs of metacognition, thought control and attribution styles of senior students were higher than normal students. The mean scores of outstanding and normal students in metacognitive beliefs were 78.51 and 67.72, respectively, in thought control, 75.54 and 66.43, respectively, and in attributional styles, 33.58 and 30.70, respectively Counclusion: Based on the research results, it can be concluded that special training to strengthen metacognitive beliefs, thought control and attributional styles of normal and outstanding students should be provided. Instructors should increase students' ability to predict success by emphasizing the importance of controllable internal factors as key to success.
