Method: To fulfill the stated objective, 80 parents (40 mothers of children with mental retardation and 40 mothers of normal children) were selected by means of random sampling method from Esfarayen and the following measuring were administrated on them: Symptoms Checklists 90-R, (SCL-90-R), Enrich Marital Satisfaction Inventory and Enright Forgiveness Inventory (EFI). Data analysis carried out using multiple regression analysis. Results: The result of analysis revealed that magnitude of forgiveness and marital satisfaction were positively correlated with each other. Moreover, using multiple regression analysis indicated that marital satisfaction can be predicted significantly by subjects’ forgiveness scores. In addition, the data analysis revealed that there is a significant correlation between mental health of mothers of mentally retarded and normal students with these variables. The findings also confirmed that birth of mentally retarded child has an adverse impact on parents’ mental health. Conclusion: It can be concluded that having children with mental retardation imposes negative impact on mother’s mental health and marital satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications of the finding have been discussed in the paper.
