The Comparison of Empathy and Emotional Facial Recognition among Children Diagnosed with Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder

| defiant disorder are similar and different in several aspects. The purpose of this study was to compare empathy and emotional facial recognition among children diagnosed with these disorders. Method: In this comparative study, 400 students (aged seven to 12 years) were selected via convenience sampling from 11 schools in Isfahan, Iran. Based on the cut-off point of the Children Symptom Inventory (CSI-4) and after the removal of unreliable questionnaires, 41 students were diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder and 19 with conduct disorder. Then, the empathy questionnaire (Auyeung et al., 2009) and the Emotional Perception Test were administered. Results: Findings indicated that emotional facial recognition, in two indices of fear and hatred, significantly differed between the two groups (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between empathy and other indicators of emotional facial recognition in conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Conclusion: There seem to be certain differences in the emotional recognition of some faces between these two disorders, which may play a role in the communication problems of these children with those around them. |
